Joseph's story starter

Carter Adams woke as a blinding light hit him in the face. "C'mon sleepy head you're gonna be late for school".

Carter loved his mum, but sometimes she came in just when he was nearly back to sleep after his alarm clock had woken him up. He emerged into the kitchen to see his mum eating breakfast. Carter sat down next to his mum and started eating sugar coated corn flakes.

On the way to school Carter's mum pulled into a gas station.
"Just going in for gas, won't be long". So Carter waited in the car. Minutes ticked by. By ten minutes Carter got quite annoyed. On twenty minutes Carter stormed into the shop.
"Mum we're late"!!! But the sight he was looking at brought Carter to his knees. Lying in the shop were several bodies surrounded by a pool of blood, one of which was Carter's mum.

So here I was watching t.v. and eating cereal. "Maximus King" said my mum. "You can't sit there all day, We've got lessons at three". With a big sigh, I got up from the couch, chucked my bowl in the sink and was heading to my room when mum called "Oh, Max look at this". As I came into the lounge I saw mum looking at the t.v. I turned my head to look at the tele. On the screen I saw a picture of a boy about my age ,12,  his face streaked with tears. "His mum and everyone else in the petrol shop where they were, were killed'' explained mum. "Nobody knows how or who''. I really felt sorry for him. As I walked into my room I remembered the address of the kids house. I'd seen it on the bottom of the screen. I decided I would walk over there, after all it was just down the road.

Guess the animal.

What it would feel like to be in an earthquake.

We were just playing, it was a normal day when suddenly the earth began to shake violently.   Mum I screamed dad earthquake.   I wanted to scream and run,  wanted to see my mum and dad but I had to stay with my little five year old sister she needed me more than my mum did right now .   so I scooped her up and jumped under the lounge room table and told her that everything would be alright.

The earthquake went for about 3min then it slowly came to an end.   I grabbed my sister and ran over to the office and right there under the desk was my mum she was shaking with fear but she was trying not to show it and she also had some blood smeared on her face that was leaking from a cut on her left cheek. She ran out and hugged us and i hugged with all my might.   I was so glad that she was OK.

then I realised "dad he's still at work" I screamed with terror in my voice. "mum will he be OK"  asked fearing the answer to the dreaded question "yes I hope so" replied my mum.   I could tell she was really scared even though she was trying to be brave so I suggested that we go to dad's work to see if he really was OK.    dad's work was just a few minutes away so we ran all the way there, but then mum let out a screech and began to cry. Dad's work building was practically smashed but the fire men were still looking for him.

five hours past and I knew I was holding on to the last shred of hope that he was still alive then suddenly two firemen were dragging a slightly limp boddie out of the ruble "dad" I yelled "hes alive he's alive".

The firemen loaded him into the ambulance and we followed them dad had a lot of cuts and bruises and when we got to the hospital that was nearly recked as well they had to amputate his leg but I was so grateful that he was alive even though the earthquake destroyed our house it can be fixed but family members can not be.

I'm a little Hoiho

I'm a little Hoiho
Black and white
Short and wobbly
A real cute sight.
I can't fly at all,
But I love to swim.
So I'll waddle to the water
And dive right in.

Music

On Tuesday we went to a music class with Mr Phillips. We did a music quiz. Firstly we got into three teams. The first question was for our team (we were team ONE.) Unfortunately we can't remember all of the questions and answers but here are some of them.

Q: What year did Bohemiam Raphsody get released?
A: 1975

Q: Name a famous opera singer.
A: Hayley Westerna

Q: Name ten songs that Mr Phillips wrote.
A: Express Yourself, Drain Goblin, Dogs, Are We There Yet?, Mary, Breaking Of This Bread, Red Dot Special, Bad Hair Day, Bless The Lord and The Lost Property Box.

We really enjoyed the quiz and had lots of fun answering the questions! :)

Thanks Mr Phillips!

Poem - Weather

It gets colder
When the wind is harder
As the water falls from the sky
It turns into hail
As the moon rises from the mountain
Everything is covered in white

Science Experiment

On Wedensday our Class got into groups and each group did a different Science experiment. Our group did one called Saturation. We had to get 2 cups 3/4 filled with warm water and get 3/4 of a cup of salt and of sugar. We had to put the salt and sugar in the different cups a teaspoon at a time until the salt and sugar couldn't dissolve because the water had so much salt or sugar in it that it couldn't dissolve anymore .That means that the water is saturated.

Does it dissolve?

Yesterday our class had science. We all did different science experiments in different groups. Our group had to see if certain ingredients would dissolve in cold water.

we had:

  • sand
  • sugar
  • chalk
  • flour
  • rice
  • gravy granules
  • coffee granules
None of these dissolved but the coffee and the flour did.

Mary's Anzac day

Mum walked up the hallway yelling, “Get up!  Get up!  Get up!” It was ANZAC day and we had to get up early because the ceremony was before dawn. We got up and put on some warm clothes because it was a very chilly morning.  When we were ready we went and got into the car and began to drive of towards Trafalgar Square in Nelson.

When we arrived at Trafalgar Square we stood in the car park in the dark watching all the old soldiers lining up for the parade.  Their shining medals, both gold and silver, proudly worn on their chests.  Some were young because they were marching in honour of their ancestors who had fought in the War.

Soon after we arrived I heard a shouted command.  The soldiers came to attention and began to march down the road towards ANZAC Park.  We followed the soldiers, one of whom was my Grandad, to the park.  When we arrived we found a place close to the stage so we could see everything.

We listened closely to the veterans speak about their time when they were overseas fighting the enemy.  Some of them read poems and some told stories.  After they had finished speaking a young girl, a teenager, sang the National Anthem and we all joined in.

As the National Anthem came to an end I jumped out of my skin when a huge explosion happened behind where we were standing.  A field gun had been fired in honour of the soldiers who had died in the War.  The noise frightened all the birds out of the trees, as well as frightening all the people who were not expecting it.  It gave me some idea of how noisy a battle must, and how frightening.

Kevin's holiday

 The big sleep over

In the holidays my friend Jacob came to my house for 4 nights and 5 days.  We rented Happy Gilmore and Billy Madison.  They were really funny .We also stayed up till 3am  most of the nights.  we listened to music and went bike riding around our house. We also cooked dinner one night.  We cooked chicken breast and noodles and sauce - it was yum.
On Queen’s birthday I’m going to his house in Golden Bay.

Taylor's Holiday

Holidays Recount

In the school break my family and I went to Australia for a holiday. The best part of it was going to dream-world with my aunty, uncle and two cousins. When we got there I went on some roller coasters with my uncle and dad (my mum and aunty were too scared!) They were real fast! Then I saw a tiger, which was on a leash being pulled around by someone, I got to pat it! It was awesome. After that it started raining so I went on a little kids ride with Hannah, which was actually quite scary! Dad and I then went on this cool ride that is a big round thing with about six seats. You go down a canal type thing and get soaked with water!
We decided to then go and watch a 3-D movie. It was real funny! When we came out of the movie it was absolutely bucketing down! We ran for cover in a shop and looked around for a bit. When the worst of the rain was past I went on the best ride (in my opinion), The Wipeout! After a few more rides, we hit the road as to bypass the traffic that is terrible when dream-world closes! It was a great day and I had real good time!

The End.

Where in the World???

A very special lighthouse built as the result of a well known maritime disaster
This is the lighthouse at Waipapa, built after the tragedy of the SS Tararua in which 131 people list their lives

Apparently this one is just a baby!  What is it?
This fish is called an oarfish and this one at about 5metres is only about 1/3 adult size.  They are apparently quite rare.
Where could this tunnel lead to?
This is the entrance to the Cathedral Caves which are on a beach accesed from the Catlins Scenic highway about 40mins south of Owaka.
A beautiful piece of New Zealand coastline but where in the world?
This bay is Porpoise By in the Catlins, almost as far south as you can go on mainland South Island New Zealand

This is the finest example of whatever this might be, in the world!  What is it and where?
This is an example of a petrified forest and can be found at Curio Bay in the Catlins.  It is the most extensive example of this type of fossilisation in the world.  Curio Bay also happens to be the nesting site for the Hoiho!

As you can see from these photos my family and I went on a little trip these holidays to explore another part of New Zealand.  We had fantastic weather although it was cold and we did lots of walking.  I hope you managed to have a good break and feel refreshed for the term to come!
