Where in the World???

A very special lighthouse built as the result of a well known maritime disaster
This is the lighthouse at Waipapa, built after the tragedy of the SS Tararua in which 131 people list their lives

Apparently this one is just a baby!  What is it?
This fish is called an oarfish and this one at about 5metres is only about 1/3 adult size.  They are apparently quite rare.
Where could this tunnel lead to?
This is the entrance to the Cathedral Caves which are on a beach accesed from the Catlins Scenic highway about 40mins south of Owaka.
A beautiful piece of New Zealand coastline but where in the world?
This bay is Porpoise By in the Catlins, almost as far south as you can go on mainland South Island New Zealand

This is the finest example of whatever this might be, in the world!  What is it and where?
This is an example of a petrified forest and can be found at Curio Bay in the Catlins.  It is the most extensive example of this type of fossilisation in the world.  Curio Bay also happens to be the nesting site for the Hoiho!

As you can see from these photos my family and I went on a little trip these holidays to explore another part of New Zealand.  We had fantastic weather although it was cold and we did lots of walking.  I hope you managed to have a good break and feel refreshed for the term to come!
